In poker, the big blind is a mandatory bet you have to make if you are two seats to the left of the dealer.
In the world of geothermal energy, the big blind is finding a huge source of heat underground where there are no obvious clues on the land surface above.
Our portfolio company Zanskar has been using advanced AI models to prospect for geothermal sites. As this article in MIT Technology Review explains:
The first step to identifying a new site is to use regional AI models to search large areas. The team trains models on known hot spots and on simulations it creates. Then it feeds in geological, satellite, and other types of data, including information about fault lines. The models can then predict where potential hot spots might be.
Yesterday Zanskar announced that their AI models had predicted a massive "blind" underground heat source in this part of western Nevada and their onsite work over the last year proved that the models were right.

This is the third such finding in Zanskar's short life and we are very encouraged that AI prospecting will be a game changer in geothermal, an energy market that many have written off because finding heat sources has been so challenging.
It is wonderfully ironic that the technology that is creating an energy crisis is also a potential solve for that energy crisis.

Hi Casters. I wrote today about how AI might be the solve to the energy crisis it is creating https://avc.xyz/the-big-blind
there's always hope 🙌 it's speed and slope of those curves that makes me wonder

That is amazing and exciting! How does their model work? Are they hired by land owners to find or do they approach them after they feel strongly about a potential find? Any estimates on how much undiscovered geothermal we have potentially available to us? Of course if everyone decentralized AI (our platform - Kilroy), we would need far less energy and resources for it, but we still have a huge energy need in this country. Congrats to them and you on your investment.
Zanskar purchases or leases the land they believe has geothermal on it and then develops and operates the geothermal plants.
Nice. Some big upfront expense there, but the potential payoff is huge. My Dad's family in Oklahoma are all farmers and their land like many there has oil under it. They often have to guard the wells that oil companies put on their land to make sure that the companies don't steal the oil in the middle of the night to bypass paying them their cut. No idea what the geothermal potential is in places like that, but would be cool to see ranchers and farmers able to take part in something like this and earn revenue to offset the constant struggle for survival as an independent farmer. Best of luck to Zaskar. The potential for humanity is really powerful.
Couldn't agree more. In time, i think it's possible. I'm looking forward to your research publication
